Project Runway Challenge 7:The Elements of Fashion

Description

for :iconcatwalkchallenge:'s Project Runway Challenge

For this challenge I was assigned the element of earth to design an outfit around. It was a little hard for me since I haven't thought about it before; I guess I relate more to the element of water. But that said, it could have been much worse, because when I think of earth there is still an immediate feeling that comes to mind, a feeling of warmth and safety. So, in designing my outfit, I wanted to keep that feeling in mind, hence the big coat. I picked fabrics that I thought would look like stone. I wanted a chunky woven fabric for the coat, which I would then panel in different directions, so that there is a barely noticeable texture variation caused by the weave of the fabric, somewhat like a rock face. The pants are intended to be reminiscent of a crystal, so the ideal fabric would be a brocade with a geometric pattern.

My first impression after seeing this design and reading your description is... I kinda get it. The cut and detail of the coat is very reminiscent of layers of rock. Not perfectly vertical or horizontal or even. It is also voluminousness enough that you could easily layer beneath it and I'm personally a lover of snug fore sleeves.
A few little things, however, when I think of earth it's not just stone. Stone to me can be hard and cold and that's where I really didn't get 'warmth'. Safety, yes. I think applying a few more of earth's attributes would have added to this, maybe instead of a geometric pattern to look like crystal on the leggings something more akin to traditional damask patterns? The fluer and leaves. I would have also liked to see some more browns.
Overall, though I do love the coat which is clearly the main piece of this design, so I would say this was a success.
